Katie’s Life: An Essay on the Consequences and Affects of Lynn Takeshima’s Death on Katie Takeshima in the Novel Kira-Kira
In the novel Kira-Kira, Katie Takeshima is affected by an extremely traumatic and sad event near the end of the book. Her sister, Lynn, dies of a terrible disease and Katie is left with an empty heart and soulless parents. Some may ask where she might go from here, what with her ruined, hollow existence. Instead, however, I’ve noticed her actually gaining a degree of respect and understanding of the relationships between people and a great deal of wisdom. This may sound cruel, but Katie is actually a better person because of this. I do not imagine her giving up on everything and becoming a sulking-dropout-smoker-druggie sort of thing. Lynn’s death has helped her understand the one key implement that will allow her to make through this tough period: the knowledge that, if you work hard, you will triumph. Before this realization, Katie believed that doing well came by luck or knowledge alone. She did not understand that working hard will yield results. With this newfound knowledge, I believe Katie Takeshima will go far in her world.
